The 1993 season represented some firsts for the WM football program.
It was the first time WM had ever won a district title in football (co-champs with Ouachita) It was WMs first ever home playoff game. It was WM great Tommy Banks breaking out and making his name known in WM history. And of course, 1993 was the first ever football state championship for WM.
Some highlights of the regular season:
WM vs Haynesville game, WM won 21-7 against the highly touted Tornados who came into the game with a 39 regular season winning streak. It was in this game that WM FB Alfonzo Bell left the game with injured collarbone and Tommy Banks came in and ran for 11 times, gaining 62 yds and scoring one TD.
When the Rebels played Bastrop, RB Larry Wright carried 21 times for 250 yards. It was the most yards gained in one game by a runner in West Monroe history.
WM vs Neville game, WM won 27-20. This was the first time that WM had beat Neville since 1980. The game would be a classic. WM was leading 27-20 in the fourth quarter, they had the ball on the 41 yard line and it looked like WM had the game wrapped up. However, Neville DB Kevin Anderson hit QB Bobby Breen and caused a fumble, Neville DE Zant Stutton recovered the Breen fumble and Neville hopes were revived. However, the WM defense held. WM LB Rob Arledge sacked Neville QB Damian Dyer on 4th and two with 26 seconds left to seal the game for WM.
The semi-final game, WM vs St. Augustine. WM won 34-33 in OT. WM came back in the fourth quarter and tied the game 27-27 with 5:27 remaining on a Breen TD but the PAT attempt failed. Earlier in the game WM fumbled and St. Aug picked up the fumble and ran in for a TD. WM scored first in OT taking the lead 34-27. However, St. Aug came back and scored as well. St. Aug went for the win with the two point conversion. WM DE Eddie Stephens intercepted the attempted two point conversion. This would be the first appearance in the state championship game in WMs forty year history. In this game, RB Larry Wright returned a kick off for 85 yards and a TD, which was the longest return for a score by West Monroe.
The 1993 5-A LHSAA State Championship game, WM vs Destrehan.
WM won 28-21. WM dominated the ground game, using the veer-option led by WM QB Bobby Breen, with WM going for 70 rushes for 309 yds and rushing TDs while Destrehan had 168 rushing yards and 146 passing yards. Destrehan led 14-7 after the first quarter but WM came back and score 13 unanswered points to take a 20-14 halftime led. Both teams would go scoreless in the third quarter. In the fourth quarter both teams scored on TDs, WM would score on a two point conversion to make up for a missed PAT earlier in the second quarter. Late in the fourth quarter QB Bobby Breen used the veer-option to eat up the clock and WM would convert 2 gutsy fourth down plays in the final four minutes.
The 1993 LHSAA 5-A State Football Championship was WMs FIRST ever state football championship and it would be the first of five LHSAA 5-A State Football Championships under Head Coach Don Shows.
Some individual stats for the 1993 season:
